Leading a laughter club offers many rewards:

  • Laughter is a fun mild aerobic exercise that expands the lungs, is energizing and replaces stale air with fresh air even while seated. This is an important component for good health.
  • Laughter boosts the immune system.
  • Laughter lifts mild depression and reduces stress.
  • Laughter in a group connects people on a non-judgmental level.
  • Laughter can help reduce pain or increase tolerance to pain.
  • Leading a laughter session will help you become less inhibited and more confident.
  • You will get in touch with your little inner five-year old and learn to be more playful.
  • Leading a laughter club is a great creative outlet.
  • Laughing on a regular basis will help you take life and yourself less seriously.
  • You’ll make new friends.
  • As a laughter leader you will impact the lives of others.
  • You will meet fun-loving people who are seeking positive experiences to share.
  • Contributing feels good.  People who volunteer or help others stay healthier and tend to live longer.

For centuries we’ve heard that "laughter is the best medicine".  In the 1970’s, scientist began to take laughter seriously.  Studies show that mirthful laughter increases the endorphins ("happy hormones") in the body and reduces Cortisol, harmful stress hormones.  These natural chemicals lift our spirits and even increase killer T cells to help fight off illness. A positive attitude and laughter appear to boost the immune system and aid prevention and healing of disease.

Laughter Yoga, the brainchild of Dr. Madan Kataria, an Indian physician from Mumbai is a mild aerobic exercise combining rhythmic clapping, yogic breathing (Pranayama), mild stretching and unconditional laughter as exercise. Anyone can laugh for no reason, without relying on humor. Laughter is simulated in a group using eye contact and childlike playfulness that soon turns into real and contagious laughter. All you need to do is give yourself permission to relax and laugh.

Laughing increases the lung capacity and exercises the diaphragm and abdominal muscles. Laughing promotes relaxation, increases circulation and helps detoxify the body. Laughing helps the lymphatic system.

Laughter is an immediate stress reducer. Practicing laughter improves your outlook and promotes a positive perspective.  Laughing is a reminder to lighten up and take life less seriously.

Dr. Kataria started the first laughter club in his neighborhood park on March 13th, 1995, with just 5 people. Today, it has become a worldwide movement with more than 6000 laughter clubs in 65 countries.

This innovative concept has been widely accepted around the world. Articles have been published in TIME Magazine, National Geographic, The Wall Street Journal, U.S. News and World Report,  Daily Telegraph (UK) and many others. Laughter clubs were also featured on Oprah Winfrey, BBC, CNN, ZDF (Germany) NHK (Japan), ABC news (USA) and many other TV networks worldwide.

Why Laughter Yoga?

1. To achieve the emotional and physical benefits of Laughter Yoga we need to laugh continuously for at least 10 to 15 minutes. (see Top 10 Reason to Laugh on sidebar) Laughing as an exercise prolongs our laughter as long as we want. On the other hand, laughter stimulated by humor lasts for just a few seconds and does not last long enough to bring about physiological and biochemical changes in our body.

Natural laughter is conditional depending on the circumstances, it may happen, it may not. In contrast, during Laughter Yoga we laugh consciously.  Attending a laughter club regularly is an easy way to reap the health benefits of laughter. During  laughter exercises we encourage deep belly laughing, using the diaphragm which exercises the abdominal muscles and diaphragm.

3. Laughter is a natural stress reducer.

5. Laughter connects people who laugh together and provides a safe environment where one can laugh loudly and heartily.

5. Laughter Clubs promote positive thinking.

Life Changing Experience

There are thousands of Laughter Yoga Clubs
In India that meet every morning in public parks. Some members proudly report they haven't missed a day in over five years. They say it makes them happy, healthy and energized - in essence, it has changed their lives.

These people are full of positive energy that makes it easy to cope with stress and decreases depression.  In fact, the impact of laughter is so profound that some practitioners claim they no longer need anti-depressants. The sustained positive emotions keep them coming back.

Participants report significant health improvements. Many saw a reduced frequency of respiratory infections like colds and flu, while others reported depression lifting, chronic medical problems improving or even disappearing. As the word spread, it was obvious that Laughter Yoga was helping people become healthier.

Clinical research on Laughter Yoga methods conducted at the University of Graz in Austria, Bangalore (India) as well as in the United States has shown that laughter lowers the level of stress hormones (epinephrine, cortisol, etc) in the blood. It fosters a positive and hopeful attitude. One is less likely to succumb to stress and feelings of depression and helplessness if one is able to laugh away day-to-day troubles.

Laughter Yoga sessions usually last for 30-60 minutes. Laughter Yoga exercises help promote mental and physical health. Laughter clubs provide a rich social network.   Laughter clubs are hosted by people trained as Laughter Yoga Leaders and Teachers.
